Africa Map by Region

Figure 1: Africa Map by Region (or Sub-divisions or Sub-regions) of UN Statistics Division

Per the UN Statistics Division

Africa is subdivided into 5 Main Regions:

  1. Southern Africa (Purple shade on Visual Chart Figure 1.)
  2. West Africa (Blue shade on Visual Chart Figure 1.)
  3. East Africa (Yellow shade on Visual Chart Figure 1.)
  4. Central Africa (Red shade on Visual Chart Figure 1.)
  5. North Africa (Green shade on Visual Chart Figure 1.)

With these 5 Main Regions Featuring 54 Countries

Figure 2: Breakdown of Total Number of Countries within 5 Main Regions of the UN Statistics Division

N.B. Some Areas of Special Sovereignty (or commonly known as Dependencies) such as Reunion and St. Helena which are considered (by the UN Statistics Division) both to be in East Africa and West Africa regions respectively, are not represented in Figure 2 (above).

And added to this (to maintain that Africa currently has 54 countries), Figure 2 (above) excludes (disputed) Western Sahara as a country in North Africa Region, even though the UN Statistics Division includes it.

Did you know The African Development Bank (AfDB) and African Union (AU) use slightly different sub-divisions other than the UN Statistics Division? (See Figure 3 and 4 below). The AU includes Western Sahara or Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic as 55th African country and has a designated region entirely for the African Diaspora.

Figure 3: Sub-divisions of The African Union (AU) and the African Development Bank (AfDB)

Per the African Union

Africa is subdivided into 6 Main Regions:

  1. Southern Africa (Purple shade on Visual Chart Figure 3.)
  2. West Africa (Blue shade on Visual Chart Figure 3.)
  3. East Africa (Yellow shade on Visual Chart Figure 3.)
  4. Central Africa (Red shade on Visual Chart Figure 3.)
  5. North Africa (Green shade on Visual Chart Figure 3.)
  6. Diaspora Africa

We challenge you with this quote made in 2014 by the Africa CEO Forum

The conflicts under way in Guinea-Bissau, Mali and the Central African Republic are front-page news in the international press, even though they are comparable to what is happening in certain parts of Indonesia, Malaysia or Myanmar.

Stories abound of piracy activities off the coast of Somalia, even though there are five times more such incidents in the Straits of Malacca.

Fewer people are affected by conflict in the whole of Africa than by the latent war between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region. But people only talk about Africa!

This unfortunate image deters potential international investments in the continent and creates a real obstacle to its competitiveness.

Be the first to cast the stone on Africa:

If your own country hasn’t felt the anguish of poverty?
If disease has not ravaged your race?
If you have not experienced corruption and bad governance in your region or country?
If your country or people have never been blackmailed for vested interest?
If you haven’t seen external forces try or interfere with your country’s politics?…

We believe in the power of businesses and investors to wilt social development and enhancement of lives across the globe.

Stay tuned-in for more! We will bring you the Africa Market in a whole new light; with on-the-ground stats, real-time numbers, comparative analysis and, synthesis matched against/with other frontier markets, newly industrialized and developed markets.
